Senior AI Sensor Fusion Engineer — Autonomous Driving & Flight
Help ASKA bring autonomous driving and flying together in one vehicle. Combine onboard sensor measurements with vehicle, environmental, payload and mission information to give the digital twin and autonomy systems a reliable, continuously updated understanding of current conditions.
Develop AI sensor-fusion software that brings diverse information together to support autonomous driving and flying throughout a Drive–Fly–Drive mission. Integrate aircraft and ground-vehicle sensors with vehicle condition, energy, weather, terrain, payload and authorized mission updates. Work closely with the Senior Digital Twin Engineer: your fused information updates the vehicle and mission model, while comparisons with predicted behavior help the team investigate data and model discrepancies. State estimation is one part of this broader role. Under the Head of AI Sensor Fusion & Digital Twin, own the fusion algorithms, data quality, uncertainty and software interfaces used by digital-twin, planning and autonomy engineers.
Role ownership
Reliable fusion of sensor, vehicle and mission information; state estimation where required; deployable algorithms, data-quality outputs and quantitative evaluation evidence.
Key working interfaces
Works under the Head of AI Sensor Fusion & Digital Twin and partners directly with the Senior Digital Twin Engineer. Sensor Fusion owns fused observations and their quality; Digital Twin owns model content and predictions. Planning and driving/flight autonomy engineers use these outputs to develop and execute authorized movement plans; controls and simulation engineers retain their specialist ownership.
What you’ll do
- Integrate onboard sensor measurements and authorized external information into a coherent picture of vehicle state, operating conditions, payload status and mission context for driving and flight.
- Develop appropriate statistical, probabilistic and AI/ML fusion methods for heterogeneous, asynchronous, noisy or incomplete data; compare learned approaches with suitable classical baselines.
- Define input and output interfaces, timestamps, coordinate frames, units, data provenance, freshness and confidence so other systems can interpret fused information correctly.
- Implement state estimation where required, including motion and sensor uncertainty, and handle calibration, bias, inconsistent observations and degraded or unavailable inputs.
- Work directly with the Digital Twin Engineer to update vehicle and mission models from fused information and investigate differences between predictions and observations.
- Integrate fused outputs with planning, autonomous-driving and autonomous-flight teams so their software can evaluate and revise movement plans within approved operating and operator-authorization boundaries.
- Implement maintainable C++/Python software and evaluate accuracy, uncertainty, latency and failure behavior through independent data, replay, simulation and controlled vehicle tests.
- Maintain versioned algorithms, data interfaces, calibration records and evaluation evidence, working with perception, controls, systems and test engineers through integration and release.
- Establish and continually improve sensor-fusion evaluations using independent datasets, meaningful baselines and repeatable tests of accuracy, uncertainty, data quality and latency; turn observed errors into regression cases and document coverage gaps.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or aerospace engineering, robotics, computer science, applied mathematics or a related field, or equivalent practical expertise.
- Typically 5+ years developing and validating sensor-fusion, estimation or related algorithms for robotics, vehicles or other physical systems; equivalent depth demonstrated through delivered work is also considered.
- Experience combining multiple sensor or operational data sources and handling synchronization, calibration, coordinate frames, data association and uncertainty.
- Strong foundations in probability, linear algebra and estimation, with practical use of methods such as Kalman/nonlinear filtering, Bayesian inference or factor-graph optimization.
- Experience selecting and evaluating AI/ML or statistical methods for heterogeneous or time-series data using independent evaluation data and meaningful baselines.
- Proficiency in C++ and Python, including implementation, software testing, debugging, performance analysis and integration with physical systems.
- Experience delivering fused information to modeling, planning, autonomy or control software, with explicit interfaces and quantitative evaluation of degraded-input behavior.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with autonomous vehicles, aircraft or mobile robots; fusion of onboard measurements and external context; digital-twin integration; multimodal machine learning; PyTorch/JAX or equivalent; real-time systems and robotics middleware. Familiarity with sensor-health assessment, uncertainty calibration and safety-critical verification.
AI tools and automation: Strongly preferred where programming is a substantial part of the role: hands-on use of Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or equivalent tools for development, debugging, test automation, code review or analysis scripts. Include relevant Python, MATLAB or other scripting experience. Provide a specific example, your contribution, any measured time saved or quality improvement, and how you verified the result. Equivalent tools are welcome.
We welcome transferable experience from related industries. You do not need to meet every preferred qualification. Tell us what you have delivered and how your skills apply to this role.
Location & working arrangements
Eagle Field Airport · 11100 W Eagle Ave, Firebaugh, CA 93622
Eagle Field Airport is our primary development and manufacturing location. Palo Alto area or remote arrangements may be considered for engineering work that does not require hands-on access. All current openings require availability to participate in development and flight-testing activities at Eagle Field Airport from time to time, with advance coordination. Flight-test roles require on-site availability for preparation and campaigns. Scheduling and travel arrangements will be discussed for each role.
